You are planning to use IKEA installation service after buying furniture from them. When you click on IKEA assembly page, it directs you to a third-party website ‘NeedHelp‘. IKEA no longer provides assembly service directly from their company in Belgium and has partnered with NeedHelp instead to fulfill this requirement, should you need it.

Now you hesitate and wonder if it is a reliable company and how does NeedHelp work? And honestly, is the process of hiring a professional carpenter through them complicated?

NeedHelp is basically an online marketplace that connects you with certified tradespeople. You don’t have to hunt for them, as they will come hunting for you once you post your enquiry online. This makes things so easy, as you don’t have to scroll through hundreds of profiles to pick one.

Here’s how it went for me:

➊ Register an account on NeedHelp.

➋ Submit your request. Upload a photo if you have one to avoid ambiguity and to communicate clearly what you want to assemble or install. Your city, postal code and text will be visible online for everyone to see, so remember to keep sensitive information private.

I attached the design made with the IKEA Planning Tool. One criterion I had was to bring up the IKEA materials from the ground floor to the first floor together with my partner.

➌ Get a market price. The portal will give you an indicative market rate based on your request. You can edit the price, but since it was my first time using the portal, I left the suggested market price of €175 as it was and see what comes later.

What impressed me greatly was that within a span of 10 minutes, I received 7 – 8 quotes via email. Over the next 2 hours, even more offers rolled in! Most hovered around €175, which seemed to be the fair rate suggested by NeedHelp. A few were slightly higher at €188.

One of them stood out by quoting €125 amidst the €175 price tags. The next day, I contacted him by replying to the portal before hitting the ‘confirm’ button. We first agreed on a date and time together, then I confirmed his job on Needhelp.

The tradesman I hired, let’s call him D, said I could pay by cash or Payconiq, whichever I preferred.

Choose Your Mobile Number

Do not be surprised that you can choose your preferred number if you purchase your first SIM card from the mobile store instead of ordering it online. If you order online, the telecom company can send you any mobile numbers. You have to resign your fate to accept it. That happened to me in the past when I ordered a SIM card online.

I walked into two stores one day and asked the staff to show me a list of all the mobile numbers available for sales. I chose a mobile number that was easy to remember and has a special meaning. If you do not ask the staff to show you the list of mobile numbers, they will select one number randomly and sell it to you.

Why Use a Prepaid Card?

You may not make a lot of calls due to limited contacts when you first arrive in Belgium. A prepaid card will take away the monthly commitment to pay when one is not working. It is deducted from the prepaid amount whenever one makes a call.

The maximum validity of the credit is 12 months provided by some mobile companies. Prepaid card plans which last for a long time allow you to retain back your mobile number while you go back to your country and then, return to Belgium later. It is suitable for frequent travellers.

In Belgium, it is easy to switch from a prepaid credit to a monthly subscription plan with the same or different mobile company free of charge. It is never too late to upgrade later. Do note that all SMS and data plans below last for 1 month only except for Orange Tempo Touch.

Out of Bundle Rate

The prepaid plans in Belgium are sometimes bundled together with free SMS and data volume for one month. Some plans come with free calling minutes as well. What remains one month later is termed as the “Out of Bundle” rate.

The tariff for “Out of Bundle” rate is usually €0.30/min, €0.10 to €0.15/SMS and €0.10 to €0.50/MB of data surfed when you have used up the bonus or when they expire, whichever comes first. You will receive the bonus again for your next top-up.

Registration of Prepaid SIM Card Required by Law

The Government wants to prevent the misuse of unregistered mobile numbers anonymously as a measure to counter-terrorism. Hence, every recharge must link to an identifiable person. All operators are required by law to register new prepaid cards from 17 December 2016. Before this date, anyone can buy a prepaid SIM card in the store without any other form of registration.

Existing prepaid card users must register their personal detail with the service provider before 7 June 2017. The registration can be done online (if this service is available) or in a store with your eID, passport or other forms of identification card. Thus, the mobile number not registered within the stipulated time will be disconnected and no longer be able to use the service.

On the other hand, consumers that have automatic top-up may not be required to register as their personal detail could already be inside the database. The same roaming benefit might not apply to the United Kingdom after the Brexit in spring 2019. Refer to more questions and answers in the European Commissioner.

EU Roaming Charges Abolished

Starting 15 June 2017, EU roaming charges are scrapped. It means that whenever you make a call or use mobile data when travelling abroad to 28 EU countries, you will not incur additional charges. It is a piece of good news for non-EU travellers as they can buy one prepaid SIM card and use the mobile data roaming in many European countries.

These are the 27 countries in which the EU roaming charges are abolished: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and in the countries of the European Economic Area: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway. Opening Your First Bank Account

I opened a bank account with Argenta immediately after I have received my Orange Card (Attest van Immatriculatie). Argenta, a family-owned bank has been around for 60 years. Besides, it is free to open a bank account with Argenta. There is no monthly maintenance charge to pay too. On the contrary, some banks in Belgium have monthly or annual charges. Therefore, check the bank charges before opening a bank account with them.

Making Phone Appointment

I called Argenta bank to verify whether it was necessary to have an eID as I did not have it yet. One can decide whether to make an appointment for opening a bank account in Belgium by asking questions over the phone or at the counter.

Documents Required to Open Bank Account

The process to open a bank account in Belgium is very easy. I gave my Orange Card with the address printed on it and the Declaration of Legal Cohabitation approval as a record. I would inform the bank again when I receive my F Card residence permit later. They can then keep a record of the new card. As my partner also has a bank account with Argenta, the bank consultant linked our record together as a reference.

It is compulsory for the applicant to show proof of residence to open a bank account. Therefore, if a person does not have an address to prove the domicile, the bank would require other forms of official documents with the address stated on it. You can request a letter of your residence address from the Gemeentehuis/Stadhuis of where you stay.

Two Types of Bank Accounts

Below are two types of bank accounts to open a bank account in Belgium. What is the difference between a Current Account and a Savings Account?

➀ Current Account

The Current Account is the primary bank account that one would first open for use in Belgium. Most of the employers in Belgium pay the salary via bank transfer to the Current Account of an individual. Likewise, one can draw money with a bank card or perform online transactions on this Current Account.

You can open a Current Account without putting in any money. That was what I did until my first salary came in a few weeks later. In addition, there is no administration charge for having a zero dollar account. Despite that, you will not earn any interest in having just a Current Account without a supplementary Savings Account.

➁ Savings Account

Opening a Savings account is free in Argenta. Furthermore, it is an optional choice. The purpose of the Savings Account is to encourage savings by setting aside some money and depositing into it. Moreover, you can get bank interest from such an account. The percentage of interest is typically rather low. On the other hand, there is no interest at all if you put all the money into the basket of the Current Account. You can always open the Saving Account anytime if you wish to do so.

I want to save the hassle of running to the bank for opening a Savings Account. Thus, I opened a Savings Account on the spot since there is no obligation to put in money. However, the bank would charge a small, negligible amount of administration fee if there is no money in this bank account for a long time. Check with the bank for more detail.

» Money Transfer Between Own Accounts

One can transfer the money from the Current Account to the Savings Account online or with a mobile bank app and vice versa. There is no need to go down to the bank to deposit money. The process of savings is rather convenient.

ATM Bank Card

An ATM bank card and a pin mailer will be mailed to your house separately. You should receive it within one week after opening a bank account. Thereafter, get the password changed at the ATM. Subsequently, you can withdraw money from all ATMs, not restricted to only your bank. There is no additional charge for withdrawal from other banks which is a plus.

» ATM Card Blocked after 3 Attempts of Wrong Pin Code

The bank will block the ATM card on three consecutive attempts of entering the wrong pin code. It happened to me recently because I did not change the pin number. As a result, I could not remember the pin numbers after some time. I called the bank for a solution quickly. The man asked for my card number. Following the call, the bank sent me a new pin code within three working days after verification.

Immediately after receiving the pin code, I tried to top up my prepaid SIM card credit online with the bank card. Despite entering the right pin number three times, I could not understand why my card was blocked once again. I called the bank again the next day.

Consequently, the man unblocked my ATM card after my explanation. He told me that upon receiving my new pin code, I should go to the ATM first to do some transactions. Such as changing the pin code or withdrawing some money to activate it. Subsequently, I could perform the online transaction.

I followed his instruction. Indeed, after changing my pin code and withdrawing some money, I had no problem making payments online. Lesson learned. Always go to an ATM first to activate the card before any online transaction.

» Lost or Stolen Bank Card

What to do for Lost or Stolen Bank Card? In the event of lost or stolen ATM/Debit/Credit cards, call Card Stop +32 (0) 70 344 344. The Card Stop website will also tell you which types of cards that you can call if you lose them. The site language is available only in Dutch or French. At the same time, inform your bank.

» Bank Security Token

When performing an online transaction, insert the bank card into the bank security token. On the merchant page, there will be step-by-step instructions on how to make payment with the security token.

Monthly Statement of Account

One can opt to receive the Bank Statement of Account monthly by mail or online from Argenta. The customers can download the Monthly Statement of Account in PDF files online. Moreover, the bank database will store the PDF files for roughly a year. You can download and print the bank statements periodically or as and when you need them.

Overseas Money Transfer

There will be no charge to transfer money overseas for Argenta. Nevertheless, the bank from the receiving country may impose a fee for inward remittance. Online personal banking cannot perform overseas money transfers. The customer has to do it personally at the bank counter.

The step is to first fill up a form with the IBAN on it. Then, give the remittance to the counter. The bank headquarters will proceed with the overseas bank transfer from Belgium to your designated country. Keep more of such forms if you regularly remit money overseas.

Credit Card

One can apply for a Mastercard credit card if the Savings Account maintains at a minimum sum of €2,500 with a stable income.

Languages Used by Banks

For Argenta and some other banks, there are only two language selections (Dutch or French). In another word, all their documents like Statement of Accounts, online banking and ATM have no English language as an option. If you do not request to choose, it will be the default language used in that region. I indicated the French language for my bank account even though I live in Flanders.

If you cannot read Dutch and French yet, therefore, select a bank that uses English as one medium. Some bank services like KBC, ING, BNP Paribas Fortis, Hello Bank, Keytrade offers English as one of the communication modes to their expat clients.

A Turning History in 2018 FIFA World Cup

2018 is said to be an unusual year for the FIFA World Cup where long-standing tournament favourites like Germany, Brazil and Argentina did not get past to the Top 16 finalists or Semi-Final. France has been the remaining one maintaining its stellar performance.

The foremost, jaw-breaking news was Germany, 2014 defending champion being tossed out during the knockout phase by South Korea with a 2 – 0 score at the 90′ +3 and 90′ +6. The world gasped as they watched their favourite team go home. Germany first startling defeat to Mexico at 0 – 1 in the same group, had our confidence level of the regular FIFA World Cup winner wavered since then.

Following the fate of Germany, Brazil was also booted out by the formidable Belgian Team in the Quarter-Final with a 2 – 1 which caused another stupefying effect on the world. The animation of a dramatic Neymar rolling on the floor during a World Cup Match went viral on social media, becoming a laughing stock while others mocked him for gaining sympathy or a penalty kick.

Below are some screenshots of the airline comparison websites and the Finnair took on the same day to ensure fairness. I have already booked the cheapest flight from Expedia Singapore with Finnair on my preferred day of departure.

The purpose is to get you to compare between your selected airline websites and Expedia Singapore to see if can get a cheaper air ticket after considering the exchange rate. The payment in Expedia Singapore is in Singapore Dollars. The exchange rate used is 1 Euro = 1.55 SGD.

Expedia Singapore

I had selected the shortest travelling flight time of 19 hours price instead of a 23-hour flight. The price for Expedia Singapore is SGD 916.10 (€591).

I had decided to book this flight and had a pleasant surprise when I booked. Expedia Singapore offered me SGD 839.10 (€541) instead! That is the final price I had paid. I had a saving of another SGD 77 (€50).

The booking was made in the morning at 11 am. At 6 pm on the same day, the price shot up to SGD 1,004.60 (€648).

Expedia Belgium

Expedia also has a website in Belgium. That is Expedia Belgium. I have also searched for my flight from Brussels to Singapore to see whether it can offer me the same cost like Expedia Singapore. Instead, the airfare cost is €739.99. Expedia Belgium is €149 more expensive than Singapore. Furthermore, it offered me a 23-hour flight which the transit time was too long. I had translated from Dutch to English so it easier for you to read.

At 6 pm, the Finnair airfare on Expedia Belgium increased to €769.99 too. Finnair was no longer the cheapest flight as seen in the morning. Jet Airways had overtaken the number one position with the lowest airfare cost of €741.52.

Finnair

Always compare between airline comparison travel websites and the airline companies to see which offers a lower airfare cost. Sometimes, you get the cheapest airfare directly from the airline company and sometimes not. For Finnair, the cost of the air ticket is €707.00. It is pretty clear-cut that the Finnair air ticket from Expedia Singapore has the lowest cost among all.

Other Airfare Comparison Websites

I have also checked on Google Flight and some other travel websites in Singapore. The costs are all above €707.00. As long as the currency used is in Euro or Pound (Skyscanner), the price of the air tickets are on the high side. That is the result of my research over the years.

Hence, he paid for it in Singapore Dollars which is certainly cheaper to ensure that he can get the cheapest flight departing from Brussels, Amsterdam or Paris.
