Rommelmarkt Goegekregen 2020: Antwerp Flea Market Locations @ Vintage & Tweedehandsmarkt in de Waagnatie
    Mar 29 @ 9:00 am – 6:00 pm

    Rommelmarkt Goegekregen

Antwerp Flea Markets 1 – 5 Events Per Month

Rommelmarkt Goegekregen organises several flea markets in different locations all around Antwerp each month since 2009. The initiative first started with some residents collaborating to arrange a jumbo sale. It allowed individuals to have an opportunity for selling or exchanging their items. Later, Goegekregen evolved as a non-profit organisation after some internal shuffling.

Not merely relying on a function to sell. Subsequently, Goegekregen wants to do more with a vision to build a bustling city for all. A place where the locals and visitors gather periodically to experience the vibrant atmosphere in selling their items. Thus, one of their slogans is to give the clothes a second life. It is also possible to donate your unused clothing for a good cause.

Cooperation with private initiatives for purely commercialised purposes is not possible within their local resources. Since then, Rommelmarkt Goegekregen has combined efforts with several neighbourhood associations and other organisations from Antwerp to achieve their mission.

    Size of Goegekregen Flea Market

The scale of the flea market is dependent on the location and the number of participating sellers. With full occupancy, the number of booths can go as high as 200 at locations such as Park Spoor Nord and Theaterplein. Not surprising. With a mere 5 to 8 euro per metre, it is not costly to have a stand. Anyone can start trading second-hand items too.

Goegekregen operates between 1 to 5 flea markets every month. The most number of stalls are organised during the sizzling summer. On the contrary, January and February have the lowest record from 0 to 1. Undoubtedly, during winter, not many people want to come out from their cosy shelter. Hence, less crowd and motivation for the stallholders.

Goegekregen has won recognition and success from its supporters over the years as evidenced by more than 20,500 likes on their Facebook Page. Hence, the best way to discover the next location is to like or follow their Facebook Page.

Date and Location of Goegekregen Rommelmarkt 2020

Below is a list of Goegekregen events and dates. It is always advisable to visit the flea market as early as possible so that you can find the best value-for-money items there. If you arrive too late, good things always go first.

» Rommelmarkt langs de Antwerpse Singel

Rommelmarkt langs de Antwerpse Singel flea market is at the open space car park of Desguinlei and Kielsevest street. Prices for clothes and bags usually start at 5 euro based on a few encounters that we asked. Bargaining may still be possible but not too far-fetched from the quoted price. I had bought a pair of shorts reducing it from 5 to 4 euro.

    » Goegekregen in ‘t Stadspark

The starting point of Geogekregen in ‘t Stadspark is near to the street of Van Eycklei where the statue stands. Usually, there will be more than one point of the flea market in the Stadspark. You have to walk parallel to Van Eycklei street further down to discover more vendors.

Depending on the number of vendors taking part, sometimes there might be a break in between the path where you might not see much second-hand on display. Continue walking. You will then see more spots with flea markets. During the warmer summer, the whole stretch of the pathway will run continuously with a lot of vendors and people. Another plus point is the mobile toilets available.

The second-hand market SNITT. Vintage & Tweedehands Kledingmarkt at StAck is on the street of Rijnkaai 150 and in front of Waagnatie Expo & Events. This flea market sells only clothing. A prominent eagle statue anchors along the spacious walkway of the flea market. Bars, food and plenty of seats are available too.

Located near to the Scheldt river, there are more things to do other than the vintage flea market. Take a walk admiring the serenity of the river or visit the nearest museum – Red Line Star Museum or MAS Museum. All museums in Antwerp are free of charge to the public on the last Sunday of every month.

Hallerbos Forest 2020: Bluebells Hyacinth Not to Be Missed @ Halle Forest
    Apr 1 – May 31 all-day
Hallerbos Forest 2020: Bluebells Hyacinth Not to Be Missed @ Halle Forest

    Hallerbos Bluebells Forest and Museum

Hallerbos is an enchanting blue forest with purple-blue wild hyacinth flowers flourishing all over the place in spring. Also known as bluebells, such flowers are rare in the world and the Halle Forest is one of them. Therefore, the peculiar charm attracts many visitors and photographers worldwide. They flood to the renowned Hallerbos for witnessing the stunning sight during the blooming period around mid-April.

The primary attraction of Hallerbos during spring is certainly the blooming hyacinth flowers. Hence, a walk in the forest is undoubtedly rewarding. The climate condition of the early spring is a key influence in the colouring of the flowers as they undergo several colour phases.

So, the flower blooms are not the same every year. The best time to visit Hallerbos is after mid-April. There are regular updates on the flowering bloom so you can track the progress of the colour change. Visitors can pleasure themselves in the irresistible dense clusters of hyacinths carpeting the whole forest.

Hallerbos is in the municipality of Halle. It is approximately 25 km away from Brussels by driving. The forest has most parts concentrated in the Flemish Brabant. The minority of it is in Walloon Brabant. It is a magnificent forest not to be missed! A truly magical sight!

    Hallerbos Rules

Here are some house rules for visitors and photographers to observe strictly.

    1. It is important to always stay on the designated path for photo-taking and filming so as to preserve the nature. The soil and unique vegetation are susceptible to damage by stepping on it.
    2. Plucking the flowers and bringing them back home are forbidden.
    3. For cyclists, there are designated cycling tracks indicated by the signboards.
    4. Professional photoshoots, filming, with or without models ought to request permission through the film counter.
    5. Dogs are welcomed but have to be leashed.

    Hallerbos Walking Tours

Hallerbos organises nature walk almost every Sunday of the month around the vicinity of Hallerbos. If you want to explore the tranquil scenery with a tour guide, check out the theme and time from their Event Calendar and contact the relevant person-in-charge. The guided tours are conducted in the Dutch language.

    Volunteers Wanted in 2020

The Government of Flanders strives to protect and enhance the development of nature.

    • Date:  April to May 2020 (Bluebells Flowering Season)
    • Time: Flexible

Agentschap Natuur en Bos (ANB) – Agency of Nature and Forest is seeking volunteers @ Halle Forest who can give a few hours of their time over the weekend to ensure a green and peaceful environment. Volunteering time is flexible. Dutch fluency is necessary and knowledge of other languages is an asset. There are generally two types of volunteers but there could be other types of job delegations as well.

    1. The first group is the Ushers which welcome visitors to Hallerbos. They make sure that the visitors do not stay off from the designated paths and walk onto the forest ground due to the highly vulnerable flowers and vegetation.
    2. The second group is the Parking Attendants to direct the parking.

    What can ANB offer you?

    • Work in an enchanting nature of Flanders
    • Enhance social interactions with other volunteers who share your interests
    • Material required to execute the task would be available

There will be voluntary insurance for the volunteers throughout the course of volunteering.

    Are you interested?

☞ Fill up the form before 1 March 2020.

The management will contact you within two weeks. Alternatively, you can contact Groenendaal Regional Office.

    • Email:  groenendaal.anb@vlaanderen.be
    • Tel: 02 658 24 60
    • Hours: Monday to Friday (08h30 to 15h30)

There is also an info session on 18 March 2020 (Wednesday) at 7 pm @ Bosmuseum – Vlasmarktdreef 4, 1500 Halle.

Free Hallerbos Shuttle Bus Service During Weekend

The Vlasmarktdreef is closed on the mentioned dates below in 2019 from the Nijvelsesteenweg. Cars will have no access to Parking 2, 3 and 8. However, there will be free shuttle bus services from Halle Station to Hallerbos Forest during the bloom period of the wild hyacinths. The bus will stop at Hallerbos P8 Achtdreven as shown in the Google Maps below.

    • 2019 April: 13 & 14, 20 & 21 and 27 & 28
    • 2019 May: 1

    There are 2 pick-up points:

    1. Halle Station and
    2. End of Welkomstlaan.

The first bus departs the station at 09h00 and runs every 30 minutes. The last bus leaves at 19h30.  Each bus has 85 available seats. You can park along Welkomstlaan.

    Public Transport to Halle Forest

Take a train and arrive at STATION HALLE.

    Weekday

    BUS 114

Visitors can take a 9 minutes bus ride from (A) Halle Station Bus Stop and alight at (J) Halle Vlasmarkt Bus Stop.

    • Walk 4 minutes to Bosmuseum (Forest Museum) from the bus stop.
    • Walk 3 more minutes to the Hallerbos Entrance from the Bosmuseum.

Take note that the transport company for Bus 114 is TEC and not DE LIJN. There are several bus stops around Halle Train Station. So, remember to go to the correct station so that you can find Bus 114 (TEC) easily. Note that this service only operates on the weekday.

There seems to be no bus route of 114 in Google Maps from Halle Station to Halle Vlasmarkt. Therefore, I decided to customise my own map. I marked all the bus stations of 114 from the starting point to the destination accordingly with the help of TEC app (Google Play Store) to ensure accuracy. Alternatively, the Bus Schedule for Bus 114 (PDF) can be downloaded.

Please click on the top left-hand corner of Google Maps to get more detail. The coloured icons will provide some other information as well upon clicking.

    Weekend and Public Holiday

The journey of Bus 114 takes 9 minutes to arrive at Hallerbos. Unfortunately, the short route for this bus service is not available over the weekend. Thus, visitors will have to take a bus that runs on a longer distance. There are two available bus numbers operated by De Lijn to go Hallerbos over the weekend.

    BUS 156

    This bus service runs hourly.

Note: I have monitored the Google Maps below for a week ever since my uploads of the maps. For Bus 156, if you check the map of this post during the weekday, it will only reflect the Bus 114 bus route instead. Likewise, if you check the map after the operating hours at night, the map will display bus route of 153. As a result, the bus journey of 156 will only show if you see this post over the weekend.

    • Take the bus from Halle Station Perron 4. Alight at Lembeek Congo (20 stops). The travelling time is approximately 20 minutes.
    • Walk 20 minutes (1.5 km) from the bus stop to the entrance of Hallerbos located at Vlasmarktdreef 4.

    BUS 155

    This bus service runs hourly.

    • Take the bus from Halle Station Perron 3. Alight at Essenbeek Mooi Vergezicht (14 stops). The travelling time is approximately 16 minutes.

    • According to Google Maps below, the walking distance is approximately 37 minutes for 3 km. Hallerbos official website mentioned that it took 15 minutes to walk from Essenbeek Mooi Vergezicht via the road Hogebermweg ‘P1’ which is probably a shortcut.

I have not figured out how one could reach the Hallerbos entrance in 15 minutes time. Between Bus 156 and 155, it seems that Bus 156 is a better choice of public transportation over the weekend to save time from walking for more than 30 minutes. It is also more convenient for people who have young children.

Remember to share the event with your friend or on social media so that more people can discover the Bellbell Forest which is a Pride of Belgium!

21 Enchanting Spots at Royal Greenhouses of Laeken

The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken (FR: Serres Royales de Laeken, NL: Koninklijke Serres van Laken) is opened for three weeks every year from mid-April to the first week of May. During spring, the colourful flowers are in full bloom anticipating the visitors to admire their spectacular glory.

It has always been a century-old tradition to allow the public to visit this historical monument. Since the Greenhouses are part of the Royal Park, the private garden is closed to the public most time of the year. Many tourists left with regret when they came to the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken at the wrong time.

Due to the restricted time frame of three weeks, locals, tour buses and tourists are queueing up at the entrance of the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken in the morning. The queue was even longer in the afternoon. Overall, expect the line to be of several hundred metres of visitors.

The entrance ticket costs €2.50 and free for those under 18 years old. No ticket reservation in advance. So as to say, everyone including the tour group would pay their share at the counter. A pamphlet would cost an additional €1.00 at the ticket counter.

    People with Reduced Mobility

People with reduced mobility will have a privilege to visit on *5 May 2020, which is a special day set aside for them with ramps and bridges on the stairs to facilitate their movement. Some parts of the route will also be adjusted slightly to make it easier for their tour around the greenhouse complex. Wheelchair users will have individual help from the volunteers. Hence, on this day, expect a longer queue than usual in some locations.

    Why Pay €2.50?

€2.50 is a low cost so that everyone can visit the royalty’s residence. Most importantly, part of the collected money funds the Queen’s Works and the restorative work.  The Queen’s Works help people with financial, housing and social problems. A tour around the Royal Greenhouses confirmed that indeed, most of the steel structure and the glass panels are in dire need of some maintenance to restore their honour.

How to Go Royal Greenhouses of Laeken by Public Transport?

Every day, there are a lot of people visiting the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken due to the three-week limited timeline. Drivers might have a problem finding a parking lot if they do not go there early morning based on experience. The best is to ditch the vehicle and take public transport.

There are four buses to go there. All buses stop at “FR: Serres Royales / NL: Koninklijke Serres” bus stop and take approximately 30 minutes to arrive.

    » Bus No. 230, 231, 232 – De Lijn

    » Bus No. 53 – STIB-MIV

Refer to the Google Maps Bus 53 route from the starting point, UZ Brussel to Serres Royales if you can take from any stops along the way. You can also take 245 or 820 but you have to change to 230, 231 or 232 halfway.

    Royal Greenhouses of Laeken History

Despite the maintenance flaw, one has to take a good look at the astonishing greenhouses built for 31 years between 1874 to 1905 in several phases. The brilliant innovator of this enormous project in 1868 was King Leopold II.

He became the second king of Belgium after his father, King Leopold I who was a German prince reigned over Belgium from 1831 to 1865. That was one year after Belgium gained its independence in 1830.

It was the ambition of King Leopold II to use Laeken for hosting important conferences and ceremonies. He first expanded the size of the castle and its surrounding. As part of the plan, he conceived the idea of constructing his supreme greenhouse complex using steel and glass.

Alphonse Balat was the architect whom King Leopold II entrusted to realise his vision in 1873. Twenty-two years later after Balat last breath in 1895, Henri Maquet and Charles Girault continued the development until 1905. King Leopold II passed away four years later in 1909 after witnessing the complete construction of his ideal glass city.

King Leopold II Passion for the Royal Greenhouses and His Beloved Botanical Collection

A walk inside the greenhouse complex might relate King Leopold II ardent interest in the plantation. The Royal Greenhouses contain thousands of exotic plants and trees. Among all, King Leopold II favourite collection was the camellias. Whenever he travelled, he would bring back new plants frequently to his growing collection.

He was passionate about the construction and followed through the architecture of the greenhouses for three decades. King Leopold II spent most of his final years in the Palm Pavilion. Thereafter, he also donated a large part of his treasured possession to the State which is managed by the ‘Royal Trust’ today.

There are two versions whether some plantation during the era of King Leopold still exists to date. Both versions are ‘official’. In the first version, the information panels displayed outside the Royal Greenhouses mentioned one of the facts that some plants are 200 years old.

In the second version, the pamphlet purchased from The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken stated that there was no more plantation left from the past. The remaining plants in the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken today came from the seedlings of the first specimen from the era of King Leopold II.

In conclusion, no matter which is the truth may not seem that important for visitors who visit Royal Greenhouses of Laeken to see the gorgeous botanical collection.

    Tour of Royal Greenhouses

Every greenhouse has a different theme and collection of trees or plants. All the routes inside the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken are directed by ropes. Due to the restriction, the visitors can only catch a glimpse of a few smaller sections of the gardens from outside. Therefore, visitors are not able to roam freely within the greenhouse complex.

Visitors have to follow accordingly to the fixed route. On the other hand, they would not miss any of the greenhouses within the compound from this arrangement. When there are a lot of people, you are following within the queue in an orderly manner.

I have customised and marked the location of all the greenhouse point in the Google Map below. One suggestion for you. You can open the map of this page at Royal Greenhouses of Laeken and read to find out more about the greenhouse.

Alternatively, you can save this customised Google Maps onto your handphone before going there. The method only works on mobile:-

    1. Open this article on your mobile.
    2. Click  on the customised map.
    3. Select “Insluiten in mijn map / Embed on my site”.
    4. Then, “Open with Maps”.
    5. The customised map will be saved on your Google Maps automatically.
    6. You can remove the map easily in when you click “CLOSE” on the left menu of Google Maps. (Scroll down your mobile screen if you cannot see this map)

Note that the version saved on your mobile is non-satellite. If you want the satellite mode as shown, you have to refresh your map by keying in “Royal Greenhouses of Laeken”. Then, you can select the satellite background. The satellite background has been blurred like below for security reason, therefore, stick to the Default version.

Map of Royal Greenhouses of Laeken

    ① Orangery

The Orangery is the oldest monument of Royal Greenhouses of Laeken which greets you upon entering the compound. Constructed during the earliest 19th century, the chimneys on top of the building is the heating system. During winter, the trees are placed inside the Orangery. Otherwise, they remain outside for beautifying the surrounding. The orange tree is one of them.

    ② Theatre Greenhouse

The Theater Greenhouse is the first greenhouse made of steel and glass after entering the Orangery building. Constructed in 1905, it was a more recent design by the architect, Charles Girault and not from the former architectural designers. It is a place to house the camellias plants during winter.

    ③ Queen Elisabeth Studio

One of the prominent sights is a lovely, cosy little cottage during a walk in the park. It is none other than Queen Elisabeth Studio. Queen Elisabeth Studio built in 1938 had its original condition preserved until now. During my visit, the studio was not opened for visiting.

Though known for her humanitarian work during the First World War, Queen Elisabeth (1876 – 1965) and Eugène Ysaÿe who was a Belgian Violinist and Composer initialised another prominent project within the music industry internationally.

The Queen Elisabeth Competition started in 1937. The competition continues to date which Queen Matilde takes over the rein currently. The aim of the music contest uncovers new talented musicians by giving them ample media exposure.

    ④ Royal Park of Laeken

Directly opposite Queen Elisabeth Studio manifested a breathtaking scenery which halted the tracks of many visitors. It is the Royal Park of Laeken with a vast of lush greenery. The bizarre thing was that they had more interest in the scenery especially the full bloom cherry blossom trees rather than Queen Elisabeth’s Studio.

Many people were busy snapping photos of the trees, the lake and the Japanese Tower at the Royal Castle of Laeken which was a distance away. When the wind blew, the petals of the cherry blossom would fly with the wind. Indeed, it was a very romantic sight. I had to admit that we lingered for quite some time too before proceeding with the route.

    ⑤ Iron Church

Iron Church has a green dome which is next to Queen Elisabeth Studio. Constructed in 1895 and supposed to be a royal chapel, online circulation mentioned that currently, the Iron Church houses a swimming pool instead. However, I could not find any photo or material to support the statement yet. Most importantly, the official pamphlet from Royal Greenhouses of Laeken still printed it as “Iron Church” instead of some other names.

    ⑥ Sacristy

Near to the Iron Church is the Sacristy. As the Iron Church and the Sacristy are not part of the visitor route, one can only see them from outside. In conclusion, the mystery of the royal swimming pool remains unverified.

    ⑦ Small Geranium Gallery

Before entering into the Palm Greenhouse, you will first pass through a Small Geranium Gallery surrounded by lovely geranium flowering plants around you.

    ⑩ Palm Greenhouse

There are a lot of big tropical plants and trees in the Palm Greenhouse like the palm trees and the fern trees. Splendidly decorated and possesses an extraordinary allure. If you look at the side of the iron support pillars carefully from a few photos below, you can see that they have Art Nouveau floral motifs on it. Somewhat, this particular area is mesmerising for the visitors probably due to the large trees against the attractive glass wall design.

    ⑪ Palm Pavilion

At the side exit of the Palm Greenhouse, a beautifully decorated staircase with flowers leads upward to a room. There is also a security officer guarding at the staircase to be doubly sure that no visitors would go up to the room discreetly. As the area is for the people to bypass and move to the right, one cannot stand there for more than a few seconds to take a photograph to avoid congestion.

It is no surprise to know that this high-security place is none other than Palm Pavilion where King Leopold II spent most of his last remaining years here. Therefore, the room has a rich historical value. Palm Pavillon is the only place that one can see a security guard during my visit.

    ⑫ Azalea Greenhouse

Built in 1885, the Azalea Greenhouse was a rather narrow trail for admiring the cultivation of vibrant azalea plants. In this section, you would see a head sculpture of Louis Paras among the heap of plants. He was the Head of Gardener for the Royal Estate from 1921 to 1939. Queen Elisabeth sculpted the bust of Louis Paras in her studio during 1939.

    ⑬ Geranium Gallery

Be stunned by the first part of the 200-metres route displaying geranium, fuchsia and hanging abutilon plants from the Geranium Gallery. Engulf in the bewitching flowers throughout the walk. Visitors are busy snapping photos. For once, feel pampered like a princess in the romantic atmosphere.

Somewhere in between the walk of Geranium Gallery, visitors enter into Diana Greenhouse where the green envelopes them such as the palm trees and soothing grass carpet.

    ⑮ Mirror Greenhouse

Forming the second half of the 200-metres route is an underground trail consisting of the Mirror Greenhouse and the Underground Gallery. Visitors will walk down the stairs. There is a slight change in the floral setting. The gallery walls are covered entirely with pruned climbing figs and oak ferns. There are also elkhorn ferns on the gallery walls too.

    ⑯ Underground Gallery

It was quite surprising to see two Smurfs in this Underground Gallery of this historical monument. I could not figure out why there were two cartoon characters there and its purpose. Perhaps, it has to do with the fact that Smurfs was a Belgian creation in 1958. Well, rather entertaining even if they may not necessarily fit into the context.

    ⑰ Embarcadère Greenhouse

Also known as the Platform Greenhouse, the Embarcadère Greenhouse was one of the pioneer construction of the complex in 1886 which took nearly two years to complete. During the olden days, guests invited to a royal reception would arrive at the Embarcadère Greenhouse first.

If you pay attention to the two statues which are almost similar, they are Dawn and Dusk by Charles van der Stappen. Each sculpture stands at the outermost corner of the two rectangular sections of Platform Greenhouse. On the third photo below were three big lovely vases of Medinilla plants. King Leopold II had brought them back from the Far East. So, are those Medinilla plants or the porcelain vases from his century?

At the exit of Embarcadère Greenhouse is a replicate of Donatello’s David. The original statue is at Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, Italy.

    ⑱ Congo Greenhouse

The Congo Greenhouse has a distinctive squarish surface area, four smaller square domes at each roof corner and a protruded octagonal ceiling in the middle. The little star that sticks out at the top of the octagonal dome is a symbol of Congo Free State. The Congo Greenhouse has subtropical vegetation like the palm trees, rubber trees and fern.

Visitors can only admire the Congo Greenhouse from outside because it is undergoing renovation since 2014 due to alarming corrosion state. Therefore, the route is inaccessible to the public until further notice.

    ⑲ Winter Garden

The Winter Garden receives the most publicity online thanks to its legendary icon of the majestic glass dome ceiling formed by 36 rafters and represented by a royal crown in the middle. Through close-up views of photos, you can see that there is Art Nouveau motif decoration on the support pillar bars.

Otherwise, it is quite difficult to spot the design from a distance for many people. One can feel the immense effort put in by the architectural designer even though the ceiling of the Winter Garden is so high up and not easy to appreciate.

Due to this stupendous glass dome ceiling images of Royal Greenhouses of Laeken seen online, I made my way to Royal Greenhouses of Laeken to witness the magnificent monument. In my opinion, the glass dome ceiling has the best maintenance among all. You can see a shiny coat of new green paint and unstained glass panels.

The Winter Garden was the first greenhouse built for King Leopold II. Due to its enormous space, the Winter Garden is the home to many species of palm trees. The Winter Garden first inauguration was in 1880 for the engagement of a royal family member, Princess Stéphanie.

    ⑳ Maquet Greenhouse

Constructed in 1902, Maquet Greenhouse took after the name of Henri Maquet who is one of the two architects responsible for completing the greenhouse complex after the death of Alphonse Balat in 1895. Maquet Greenhouse is 90° of Winter Greenhouse and not accessible to the public.

    ㉑ Banquet Greenhouse

Following the arranged path of the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken, the Winter Greenhouse is the last conservatory to see the botanical collection of King Leopold II before arriving at the exit point of Orangery building again. Over here, there are some souvenir stalls and large photos of the Royal Greenhouses for purchase.

There is one snack stall around the corner. At the corner of the building is the Banquet Greenhouse. After walking in the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken for a while, people can sit inside the Banquet Greenhouse to enjoy some sunlight.

Rommelmarkt Dageraadplaats 2020: Antwerp Flea Market @ Dageraaadplaats, Zurenborg
    May 3 @ 7:00 am – 6:00 pm

    Rommelmarkt Dageraadplaats 2020

Antwerp Flea Market Locations and Photos

Rommelmarkt refers to a flea market. The event happens in Dageraadplaats 3 to 4 times a year in the Zurenborg district located in South-East Antwerp. Believe me, some of the items are indeed value-for-money if you are eagle-eyed to spot the hidden treasure among the pile of second-hand items.

As the Rommelmarkt Dageraadplaats does not happen every weekend as the typical flea markets do, therefore, expect to see many people who go there early to scout the best items there. Even in the afternoon, the flea market continues to have a large crowd of people.

There are approximately 110 exhibitors who set up their stalls as early as 6:30 am. You can look and walk around for a few hundred metres in the Dageraadplaats square. Like such a jumbo sales market in Belgium, you can find all sorts of stuff on sales. For instance antiques, clothing, shoes, household furniture and appliances, books, posters, etc.

    Restaurants and Cafés

There are a few restaurants and cafés surrounding the Rommelmarkt Dageraadplats where you can grab a drink or have some food. However, many are not opened on Sunday too.

    Sint-Norbertuskerk Church

The Rommelmarkt Dageraadplaats situated in front of Sint-Norbertuskerk Church gives the flea market a captivating background. The Sint-Norbertuskerk opens its door for visiting during the summer from 9 am to 5 pm every day. Therefore, you can visit the church at the same time. On 10 September 2017 when I went to the flea market, the church was still open.

How to go to the Rommelmarkt Dageraadplaats Flea Market?

    • By Tram: Take Tram No. 11 which starts from ‘Berchem Station’ or ‘Melkmarkt’. Get off at ‘Dageraadplaats‘.
    • By Velo: There is a velo station no. 110 beside the flea market.

    • 14 June 2020
    • 19 July 2020
    • 16 August 2020
    • 6 September 2020

Coincidentally, on 3 May 2020, Swan Market Antwerpen is also happening on the same day. You can visit two places on the same day to kill two birds with one stone. However, Swan Market is not a second-hand market but a platform for entrepreneurs who would like to showcase their talents in handmade items.

For those who have the interest to sell things ranging from clothes, books to housewares and so on can register with Rommelmarket Dageraadplaats now. Some dates are still available. The price is 6 euro per running metre + 10 euro refundable deposit per event to be paid within 5 days of reservation by bank transfer. You can get the full detail from their website.

Swan Market Antwerpen 2020: Entrepreneurship of Handmade, Design, Vintage and Organic Items @ Grote Markt
    May 3 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm

    Swan Market Antwerpen 2020

Swan Market Antwerpen originates in the Netherlands. It started in April 2015 in Antwerp. Ever since, once or twice a month from April to September, the event would take place in Grote Markt, near to the Groenplaats. You can locate Swan Market Antwerpen in front of the famous City Hall (Stadhuis van Antwerpen) and near to the Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal).

Swan Market Antwerpen @ Grote Markt

The concept of Swan Market focuses on entrepreneurship of handmade, design, vintage and organic items. They are mostly ladies’ stuff like bags, wallets, jewellery and clothes, just to name a few of the more common display. Because many items are handmade, the design only comes in a single piece. That is the uniqueness since there would be no repetition. The prices of these handmade items were high too.

What I like about the Swan Market Antwerpen during my visit under the blazing sun on a warm summer, was the free can of drink given by one of the sponsors, San Pellegrino. You can see from the photo below that many people were queueing up for free drinks. One could also choose the flavour. At another corner was a few food stalls and bars. Tables and seats were available.

    Swan Market Antwerpen Free Drinks

Swan Market Antwerpen Bar @ Grote Markt

    Swan Market Antwerpen Seating

There was also a bouncing castle for kids and some live music performance. As we arrived at 12.30 pm and stayed for nearly one hour there, their live music had not started yet. So far, the location of Swan Market in Belgium happens only in Antwerp. However, throughout the year, the Swan Market takes place in different cities in the Netherlands. The event in Antwerp is free.

    Are You an Aspiring Entrepreneur?

For aspiring entrepreneurs who would like to rent a stall to display your hand-made items or have ideas on any other creative workshops, you can check out the organiser’s page, SHPPR booth rental rates. The organiser would need a few days to decide whether your concept fits into their theme or if there is an overwhelming supply of similar objects on sales.

    Swan Market Antwerpen 2020 Dates

The Swan Market Antwerpen 2020 has 4 published dates from March to July as follow:

    Location: Grote Markt

    • 22 March 2020
    • 3 May 2020
    • 7 June 2020
    • 5 July 2020

On 3 May 2020, it will have the same event date as Rommelmarkt Dageraadplaats so you can kill two birds with stone again. Swan Market Antwerp sells new items whereas Rommelmarkt Dageraaplaats highlights on second-hand items. It is recommended to go to Rommelmarkt Dageraadplaats in the morning and then proceed to Swan Market Antwerpen.

Public Transport to Swan Market @ Grote Markt

Located in one of the most touristic areas in Antwerp, locals would be familiar with the area and have no problem going there. However, I would like to be kind to tourists or people who are not sure how to go to Groenplaats. Here is a Google Map to reach the location.

    » From Antwerp Central Station

Walk approximately 21 minutes for 1.7 km. If you take a train to Antwerp, the walk from Antwerp Central Station to Grote Markt is highly recommended. You can pass through Meir which is the most trendy shopping street in Antwerp. However, on Sunday, most of the shops are closed. You get a glimpse of the fashion anyway. If you like, you can also catch a tram or buses within the vicinity.

    » From Antwerpen Premetrostation Groenplaats

If you take tram 3, 5, 9 and 15, alight at “Groenplaats” Light Rail Station. Walk 400 m for 5 minutes to the Swan Market Antwerpen at Grote Markt.

There are a lot more trams and buses that go to the area around Grote Markt and Groenplaats. You have to find the tram number that is the most convenient for you to reach the destination by consulting Google Maps.

A few steps away from the Swan Market is a Vietnamese restaurant, Pho 61 in Grote Markt. Be it a bowl of Pho vermicelli noodles or just some spring rolls as snacks, read my food review of Pho 61 Antwerpen and try the food there! Have fun there!

Medieval Market of Etterbeek 2020: Weekend Activity to Watch the Folkloristic Characters from the Middle Age in Brussels @ Parc du Cinquantenaire
    May 15 @ 4:00 pm – May 17 @ 10:00 pm

    Medieval Market Etterbeek 2020

    Activities Highlight for 28th Edition

For the past 27 years, one of the key events in the Etterbeek municipality is the Medieval Market (Marché Médiéval d’Etterbeek). Participants will have three days of unforgettable memory through the discovery of the Middle Ages, its folklore and its traditions over the weekend. This year, it will be a 3-day fun affair from 15 to 17 May 2020 @ Parc du Cinquantenaire, Brussels.

The Medieval Market usually happens three days before Pinkstermaandag. Also known as the Whit Monday, or Pentecost Monday, it is a Christian holiday which commemorates the descent of the Holy Ghost upon the disciples of Jesus Christ, according to the New Testament of the Bible.

In this 28th edition highlight of the festival in Brussels, you can see a lot of folkloristic characters and crafts come true right before your eyes like saddler, blacksmith, potter, carpenter, stonecutter, archers and arrows, etc.

There will also be a demonstration of sword fighting by the knights from no less than three companies. The Belgian Federation of Medieval Fencing will also be present. the Austrian artist Walter will perform a series of high-flying acts for thrill-seekers while Ludenten will offer workshops specifically for children. The children can have fun at the rhythm of the animations or linger at the stand to see the work of an executioner, the sorcerer or the healer.

Throughout the weekend, the musical group “Varius Coloribus” and “Dudelzwerge Music” will take charge of the musical performance. No less than 180 exhibitors from all over Belgium and throughout Europe will present their artisan products.

Gourmands will be pampered for choices among medieval food stalls carried out in the Middle Ages. Trades such as blacksmith, stonemason, master tailor, manufacturers of arrows and bows come live at this majestic event. A special highlight will be a wooden rail horse on a pyramid of medieval maps.

Be curious by the taste difference from the medieval time as compared to the modern time. The mentioned activities consist of only a part of all the activities proposed during the 27th Medieval Market of Etterbeek. Be there to witness the knights in shining armour!

Zwemvijver Boekenberg 2020: Swim Free at Antwerp/Deurne Most Natural Outdoor Pool during Summer @ Boekenbergpark Deurne
    May 17 @ 12:00 pm – Sep 13 @ 6:00 pm

Free Entry at Zwemvijver Boekenberg Natural Outdoor Pool during Summer!

If you are planning to go swimming in Antwerp during the hot summer and have not discovered Zwemvijver Boekenberg, this should be one of the swimming pools that you should not miss.

Zwemvijver means ‘swimming pond’ in English. The location is at Boekenberg which is in Deurne and near to Berchem. Moreover, Zwemvijver is right in the middle of a park, Boekenbergpark. Coincidentally, it is also near to the Antwerp International Airport.

What is So Unique about Zwemvijver Boekenberg Ecological Pool?

First and most important of all, the swimming pond is ecological. It makes use of the plants and stones as a water filter to purify the plant. That means no drying effects of chlorine and other harmful chemicals on the skin. The cold and purifying water is sure to rejuvenate you as well.

There are two pools over there. The large pool is 73 m long with a depth of 1.80 m and 2.50 m. The small pool has a depth of 50 cm and is mainly for children.

There is a large lawn over there. If swimming is not your interest, how about a picnic with your family and friends under the sun? The surface of the lawn is flat. So, it is indeed comfortable to place just a thin cloth and lie on the even surface.

Secure your belonging with ease. Lockers are available at a coin of 2 euro. At the end of the day, you can take back the 2 euro coin. If you intend to use the locker, arrive earlier as it gets more crowded in the afternoon so there might not be enough lockers for use.

Within walking distance from Zwemvijver Boekenberg, there is a playground for the children. Although this is not the main attraction, it serves its purpose to keep them busy.

You can play badminton in the open field beside the playground if there are not many people. As there is not much wind due to the side fences, the location is better than some other windy open fields. Bring your rackets though.

Is free entry to the incredible all-natural swim site another unique feature to boast? Best things come free. If you have a bike, it seems to be the most flexible way to get there easily and to spend a perfect afternoon swimming, suntanning, talking and eating!

Picnic and Suntanning at Zwemvijver Boekenberg Lawn

Things to Note at Zwemvijver Boekenberg Outdoor Pool

❶ Wear appropriate swimsuit because many are refused entry into the swimming site due to inappropriate swimwear. Here, I refer to the men who wear loose short. The men should wear appropriate swimming trucks. The security guards even have pictures on their hand to show what is the correct type of swimwear. If they refuse entry to these people, they are still allowed to remain on the lawn.

❷ For ladies, no T-shirt over the swimsuit or bikini in the swimming pool. Girls with long hair should tie their hair.

❸ Go as early as you can as in the afternoon, the lawn is full of people. It is likely that you would still be able to find a picnic or suntan spot there, but the position might not be ideal.

❹ During peak hours when there are many people in the afternoon, there would be an announcement in Dutch. It means that visitors can only swim for a block of 15-minutes. Furthermore, only 150 visitors are allowed into the swimming pond each time. In this instance, you can see a long queue outside the swim site.

❺ No sitting on the edge of the wooden platform along the swimming pool circumference. It is for the lifeguards to walk. They are constantly looking around the swim site for rules breakers.

❻ Water might still be cold in early summer as the temperature has not warmed it up enough. On the other hand, whether the water is cold or not is subjective.

❼ No food and drinks sold over there though. You have to self-supply your own. If you are lucky, there will be a van coming in the afternoon to sell ice-cream. The business is good with a lot of people queueing up to buy from the ice-cream truck.

Zwemvijver Boekenberg 2019 Date and Time

Swan Market Antwerpen 2020: Entrepreneurship of Handmade, Design, Vintage and Organic Items @ Grote Markt
    Jun 7 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm

Rommelmarkt Dageraadplaats 2020: Antwerp Flea Market @ Dageraaadplaats, Zurenborg
    Jun 14 @ 7:00 am – 6:00 pm

    Rommelmarkt Dageraadplaats 2020 Dates

In 2020, the released dates for Rommelmarkt Zurenborg are all on Sunday for five months from 7 am to 6 pm. The jumble sales will continue despite the weather.

    • 3 May 2020
    • 14 June 2020

Interested? Email them. In the meanwhile, read on and check out some photos. Immerse in the Belgische atmosphere. That is what I really like about flea markets in Belgium!

Rommelmarkt Dageraadplaats 2020: Antwerp Flea Market @ Dageraaadplaats, Zurenborg
    Jul 19 @ 7:00 am – 6:00 pm

The parents can keep the children busy by letting them have fun on the playground. There are also several benches around the playground too.
