Every spring, the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken opens its door to the public for three weeks during the second week of April following a century-old tradition until today. For most times of the year, the public cannot visit the premises of the royalty.

People with reduced mobility will have a privilege to visit on a special day set aside for them with ramps and bridges on the stairs to facilitate their movement. Some part of the route will also be adjusted slightly to make it easier for their tour around the greenhouse complex.

What Do You Expect to See in the Royal Greenhouse of Laeken?

King Leopold II who was the second king of Belgium invented the brilliant idea of his majestic greenhouses. He entrusted the project to the architect, Alphonse Balut who designed the enormous complex. The Royal Greenhouses were built for 31 years from 1874 to 1905.

There are more than 15 greenhouses where visitors will tour around the greenhouse complex. Each greenhouse has a different theme and houses different types of trees and plants. Some collection originated from the century of King Leopold II.

Other than the admiration of the greenhouse architecture, visitors can also indulge in the pleasure of lovely flowers in their full bloom during spring. Visitors can expect to see subtropical trees such as palm tree and fern tree. As for the flowering plants, the majority are geranium, azalea, camellias Medinilla and abutilon.
